Ceil Silver Ambassador nominations due by May 31

The Ceil Silver Ambassador Fund raises money from the VFP community to bring a developer to the Southwest Fox conference as an ambassador for the developers in his or her country. This gives the recipient the opportunity to meet and share experiences with developers attending Southwest Fox and gives other attendees the opportunity to learn about VFP development in the recipient’s country.

We are looking for nominations from the VFP community for the 2013 recipient. To nominate someone you think deserves to be selected, please email their name and a brief list of their contributions to the VFP community to ambassadorfund@swfox.net. Names must be submitted no later than May 31, 2013.

In addition, we are looking for donations to allow us to pay for the travel costs for the ambassador. We urge you to consider donating any amount you see fit, small or large, to this fund. See http://www.swfox.net/ambassador.aspx for details. 100% of donated money goes to the travel costs for the ambassador. Not a single penny is used to cover administrative costs. All time managing the fund and working through the selection process is donated. No one is paid for their time.

Ceil Silver Ambassador News

We have bad news and good news. First the bad news: Unfortunately, for reasons outside of his control, César Chalom is unable to attend Southwest Fox 2009. We are really disappointed because many people, us included, were looking forward to meeting César. Hopefully, next year.

The good news is that Emerson Santon Reed has agreed to come in César’s place. Emerson, a software developer from Americana – SP, Brazil, has worked with Visual FoxPro since 1999, and is an active member of the Brazilian VFP community. He presented a session at the Brazilian VFP conference in 2008. He is well known to the global VFP community for his ThemedControls project at VFPX. He also has a blog where you can find useful material on Visual FoxPro. We are very excited that Emerson can attend Southwest Fox 2009 and know that many attendees are looking forward to meeting him in person.

2009 Ceil Silver Ambassador

We are pleased to announce that César Chalom has been selected as the 2009 Ceil Silver Ambassador. He will attend Southwest Fox 2009 and represent the Brazilian VFP community.

César, a software developer from São Paulo, Brazil, has worked with Visual FoxPro since 2003, and is an active member of the Brazilian VFP community. He has attended the Brazilian VFP conference since 2004 and presented sessions at the conference in 2006 and 2008. He is well known to the global VFP community for his contributions to several VFPX community projects, including GDIPlusX and FoxCharts. His blog is an excellent source of technical material on GDIPlusX and other VFP topics.

We are very excited that César can attend Southwest Fox 2009 and know that many attendees are looking forward to meeting him in person.

The Ceil Silver Ambassador Fund

Back in October we announced the formation of the Southwest Fox Ambassador Fund.

On January 3rd our dear friend Ceil Silver passed away after an extended battle with Melanoma. You can read some terrific writing by Ceil as she chronicled her battle with cancer on her blog “Too Much Me.” You can also read a wonderful message from her daughters after her passing too.

Today I am officially announcing a name change with her daughters’ permission. The Southwest Fox Ambassador Fund is now officially renamed:

The Ceil Silver Ambassador Fund

We all miss Ceil.

Ambassador Fund – Update

The Ambassador Fund for Southwest Fox is progressing on a couple of fronts. The first part is the donations are continuing to arrive. We currently have US$2371 in the bank and another US$625 pledged. This is an amazing number and shows the generosity of the community.

Last week we also invited a few people in the Fox Community to serve on a committee that will define the process for selecting the Ambassador(s) brought to the conference in 2009. This group of people will be announced once we get confirmation from everyone.

I am not sure exactly how much time it is going to take to define the selection process. We all have full-time jobs and this is a voluntary position. We expect to start out by brainstorming ideas, figure out what makes sense, and then publish the process. We will be blogging the progress of the fund, and naturally the selection process. Projecting out, I think it would be terrific if we have the process decided near the end of January. This would give us a few months to implement the process before registrations start in May for the conference.

Southwest Fox Ambassador Fund

At the keynote presentation for Southwest Fox 2008, we announced the Southwest Fox Ambassador Fund. (We actually called it the Worthy Developer Fund, but that name was just a placeholder until we came up with a better one. Thanks to Christof Wollenhaupt for the inspiration for the new name.)

Many VFP developers around the world are providing incredible contributions to the VFP community, such as working on VFPX projects, blogging about techniques and code to do cool things in VFP, or providing exemplary support in various VFP forums. However, for most of them, attending a conference such as Southwest Fox isn’t feasible.

The Southwest Fox Ambassador Fund is intended to raise money from the VFP community to allow one (or more, depending on how much is raised) developer to attend next year’s conference as an ambassador for the developers in their country. This will give them the opportunity to meet and share experiences with developers attending Southwest Fox and give us the opportunity to learn about VFP development going on in their country.

Geek Gatherings, the organizers of Southwest Fox, are kicking off the fund by contributing the conference registration fee. Also, we held a silent auction at Southwest Fox to start the ball rolling. Between the silent auction and contributions from generous people at the conference, we’ve already raised over $1,100!

We urge you to consider donating any amount you see fit, small or large, to this fund. Contributions can be sent, by check to:

Geek Gatherings, LLC

100% of donated money will go to the travel costs for the ambassador. Not a single penny will be used to cover administrative costs. All time managing the fund and working through the selection process will be donated. No one will be paid for their time. So if you want to donate to the fund, please send a check or we can arrange non-credit card PayPal transaction so we don’t have unnecessary discount fees.

Also, let us know if you want your contribution to be public or not. If so, we will include your name in the list of contributors announced at next year’s conference.
